American Man: Age 10 Respnse

American Man: Age 10 by Susan Orleans portrays  Colin's Duffy, a ten year old boy's character in a very intriguing way. I mostly enjoyed Orleans's description about Colin being so mature for a ten year world, talking about how he wants to work for FBI, how he knows the details about college tuition, how he knows the exact amount a lawyer ears, how he loves recycling, how he asks very hard and important questions, and how he thinks the world is the most important thing in the world. It is very hard to choose a paragraph that caught my attention, because the whole short story is full of surprises and kept me on tip of my toes while I was reading it. But as we did an exercise last class, on imagery and describing our room in a very detailed way possible, I found the paragraph where Orleans's describe Colin's room very interesting. I loved each and every detail about his room especially those torn out ads that are on his wall especially about a women in blue jeans on a horse. I love how it makes a great impact when Colin thinks about Wyoming and what he wants to do in his future. It is like his own relaxation therapy. Orleans's also gives the detail about his room from a ten year old perspective, pointing towards a Spiderman poster on his wall, his pet cage, his husky brown teddy brown, and also how his room is kind of messy with clothes piling on the floor. I thought the ending of this paragraph really portrayed Colin's maturity for his age, because the time he spend with Orleans's in his room he only talked about merchandise, media, and entertainment like he was an expert. Over all, I thought this short story was one of the most unique and interesting one that I encountered so far.

  1. Sumaita,
I really liked your incorporation of what we learned in class from the bedroom description exercise towards how Orlean describes Colin's room. As you mention, Orlean is able to describe Colin's character without specifically stating the sort of kid that he is through the description of his room. Through Orlean's writing techniques taking on the perspective of how a child would speak, it also makes the ending especially surprising given how society was able to vastly affect Colin growing up.
